Theresa Logan
Theresa is Principal and Founder of Subduction Consulting and a facilitator with 20 years’ experience in community organizing, community development, public policy engagement, organizational equity, conflict resolution, and restorative justice. She is dedicated to sharing skills and tools for anti-oppressive conflict transformation and trauma healing towards collective liberation. And, true collective healing and evolution is only possible with an honest reckoning with the inherent race, gender, and power dynamics present in every interpersonal conflict, group process, organizational policy, and social structure.
Why now?
People have been approaching each of us for years, asking: how can I learn to do what you do?
We haven’t had a simple answer. Our individual paths to the intersectional, racial equity-centered, conflict & systems transformation work that we do is the result of unique life experiences, diverse educational paths and highly specialized skill sets developed through decades of eclectic professional experiences. And the need for racial equity analysis, conflict transformation skills, and visions for more collaborative and just ways of working together is growing exponentially.
In recent years, we have seen the demand for racial equity support outpaced by the availability of highly skilled consultants. Unfortunately, many “DEI consultants” lack the skills necessary for supporting organizations through the tumultuous waves of interpersonal conflict, hostile resistance and structural stagnation that inevitably accompany racial equity initiatives. Understanding the terrain and explaining it to others is one thing, actually navigating the terrain towards concrete, meaningful outcomes in an organizational ecosystem is another.
So, we have designed the Racial Equity Consultant Development Program to distill decades of best practices and lessons learned into an intensive 12-month professional development program. We are not interested in hiring people to work for us in traditional, hierarchical ways where we exploit their labor for our own profit. We do want to build a community of colleagues and collaborators who have their own thriving practices where they can manifest their own vision for the work and maintain complete control their own time, labor, energy and decisions. This program is designed for individuals who are ready to lead the way to creating just workplaces for all, and would benefit from collaboration, skill development, mentorship and peer support while building their practice and surviving capitalism.
Who is this for?
We are gathering innovative practitioners and strategists who are searching for a community of radical visionary leaders. We want to help folks find their own freedom in the pursuit of liberation for others; and to create a platform and opportunity for folks who are ready to become consultants and facilitators at their current workplaces or in their own private practices. Together, we will hone our abilities as self-aware, race-conscious consultants who serve as skilled facilitators and trainers, through the development of the concrete skills necessary to promote healthy change in groups and worksites committed to the struggle for human rights and workplace justice. And make sure we can pay our bills and provide for our families in the process.
This is an excellent opportunity if any of the following apply to you:
You have worked on equity issues consistently within your own workplace and are dreaming of moving into private consulting but aren’t sure how to do it.
You have been working side gigs as a consultant and would like to grow your practice into a sustainable full-time endeavor that doesn’t require a day job.
You provide racial equity consulting/training services to other teams, departments or divisions within your organization as part of a job you intend to keep, and are seeking additional skills, tools & frameworks to improve your outcomes.
Requirements & Selection Criteria
The cohort will be limited to 15 - 20 participants. All are welcome to apply. We will prioritize applications from Black, Indigenous and People of Color womxn & femmes.
Participation requires that:
You believe that Black Lives and Trans Lives matter.
You have a well-developed analysis of the race, class, gender & power dynamics operating within mainstream “professional” organizations AND a vision for how to shift them to more collaborative, empowering and equitable spaces.
Past consulting experience is NOT required. Past facilitation, mediation, community organizing and/or management experience is a plus.
Investment - $4,200
Installment plans and limited financial assistance are available.
This is an investment in your career and your future, and it is a tax-deductible business expense!
An educational degree in relevant social sciences costs at least 10x as much while providing a much less sophisticated analysis and zero practical experience. Certificate programs cost about the same, but give you much less content, are generally repackaging “diversity & inclusion” frameworks that are 10-20 years out-of-date, rarely discuss anti-Blackness, and do not immediately lead to paid opportunities with actively practicing consultants.
We are not a non-profit, we do not have fixed salaries. Our client work pays our bills and supports our families. We are committed to making our services accessible to the community, and we are taking time out of our businesses to help you build yours. We are keeping the fee as low as possible while covering expenses and honestly valuing our time - in the same way we expect you to value yours. And, if private practice is your goal, our goal is to support you in finding opportunities to earn income and see a return on this investment before the program ends.
Application opens October 10.
Application due by Nov 6.
Application decisions will be announced by November 18th.
