You have provided me with insights that I never thought I would have. I realized I already knew a lot of the information. But I didn’t have the language for it. I didn’t know how to constructively use it. I didn’t know how to string string it all together to make effective change. You’ve modeled that.
— Kellie Shaw, Director Equity, Home Forward

Going through the cohort with peers allowed me to grow within a safe environment that also challenged me. It gave me new tools and opportunities to look at ways of approaching the work that really fundamentally changed how I see my role in equity within my community.
— Katie Thornton, Senior Regional Primary Care Manager, North & Northeast Health Centers, Multnomah County Health Department

Our Approach

Our leadership philosophy is one of stewardship – prioritizing the communication and execution of a shared vision via tangible, actions and processes.

Moving racial equity and human dignity in the workplace is a calling as much as an occupational duty – learning how to move the arch of justice in favor of the most impacted is a learned skill and serves as the moral compass of our work.

Stewards of justice must articulate and clarify a mission, while defining a vision that guides their team as they navigate the often treacherous waters between future vision and current reality.

The most impactful stewards can simultaneously keep the big picture and the key details in mind, keeping an eye on the short and long-term mission – while never relinquishing the stated vision.

The leadership skills required for this brand of stewardship include effective communication, a focus on culture & outcomes, judicious deployment of power, self-control, compassion, consistency, loyalty, an ability to listen, willingness to be proven wrong, and ability to provide strong motivation to self & others.

Together we will enhance each of the following areas with specificity:

  • the ability to motivate & educate others

  • group facilitation skills

  • community organizing skills

  • understanding HR processes and pitfalls

  • ongoing commitment to learning, self-reflection, and self-care

  • the willingness to engage in bold experiments

  • resilience & creativity to navigate failures & challenges

Is this opportunity right for me?

The 2024-2025 Strategic Leadership Intensive is designed for managers, directors and non-supervisory leaders committed to using their positions of power to advance racial justice. This intensive professional development program will provide skills, strategies, frameworks, expert advice and peer support for navigating the most common challenges managers face, including:

  • Overwhelming workloads and staff burnout, complacency & complaining.

  • Spending too much of your day managing interpersonal conflict & drama.

  • Difficulty connecting equity goals to staff’s daily tasks and “real work.”

  • Resistance to equity work and dissatisfactory organizational responses to experiences of racialized harm.

Participating leaders will receive individualized support in troubleshooting & navigating their most pressing real time challenges. We will build a network of peer support while strengthening skills & tools for:

  • Cultivating team cultures that are caring, supportive and effective!

  • Identifying your superpowers and growth edges as a leader, and tailoring strategies to reach your individual & team goals.

  • Setting equity and inclusion goals that are centered in your team’s core purpose and the experience of the most historically impacted.

  • Managing interpersonal dynamics & performance issues with clear boundaries & expectations, effective communication strategies, and real accountability.

If these challenges sound familiar, and this support sounds like what you need, please apply!

Do you have scholarships or payment plans available?

Yes, we will consider partial scholarship requests from small community based organizations with limited professional development budgets and from individual leaders of Color lacking full organizational funding. Please note your scholarship or payment plan request in your program application. We will confirm scholarship & payment plan arrangements upon acceptance into the program.

Can I still participate if i know i won’t be able to make all of the dates?

Yes! The first 6-weeks of core training will be offered live and recorded for those who cannot attend live.
