Navigating Conflict, Leading for the Future

How do we navigate a sea of racialized trauma towards a just and sustainable future?

How do we lead our organizations towards more equitable outcomes amid petty positioning, endless politicking, distractions, discouragement, burnout and resistance?

Join Carlos Kareem Windham of El Porvenir Services & Theresa Logan of Subduction Consulting for a 6-week journey to develop new strategies & skills for navigating interpersonal conflict while leading ourselves & others towards the future we want to create.

Our primary framing/focus will be the application of skills, frameworks and tools to support workplace managers, supervisors, and directors in cultivating effective teams that achieve meaningful outcomes. And this series will provide value to anyone who is in a position of leadership in their workplace, school, family or community - whether that leadership role is formal or informal, paid labor or gifted labor.

Together we will:

  • Identify our individual & collective goals for creating more connected, effective & resilient teams.

  • Identify how common trauma & stress responses show up at work, and learn simple skills for supporting wellness for ourselves & our team members.

  • Map the current terrain of power, resources, relationships & challenges in our organizational systems.

  • Understand the history of how we got to this present moment, how it haunts & constrains our actions, beliefs & dreams through intergenerational/structural patterns and dynamics.

  • Practice interpersonal skills for strengthening relationships, transforming conflict, building trust, generating collaboration & more meaningful & equitable outcomes in our work.

  • Develop responsive, adaptable strategies for achieving our goals & inspiring our teams.

our experience & approach

In the past decade we have worked with dozens of organizations, and thousands of individuals, to move through the chaos and turmoil of conflict towards outcomes that advance racial and social justice. It is not enough to simply learn about the history of racial inequality, nor to be able to abstractly define the concepts of intersectionality & equity - though those are important starting places!

We also have to understand that talking about racism at work and shifting workplace policies & practices to center the most historically impacted, are not just mental exercises. They are embodied experiences that often activate our most painful and shameful memories, our inherited intergenerational patterns, and our survival responses. The patterns that are activated and the ways they inhabit our bodies can be very different depending on wether we and our ancestors were most often the abuser, the oppressed or the bystander who failed to intervene - and in most cases they were some combination of the above.

History lives in and through us and we must address it in a holistic way in order to truly shift our current reality and create a more sustainable & just future for our descendants.

What you get

In the six live sessions of this highly interactive series, participants will be invited to practice observing & engaging their physiological, emotional and intellectual responses to conflict and racism. Each session will introduce new tools and skills for analyzing the intersecting dynamics of power and privilege in interpersonal conflict, along with skills for transforming conflict into opportunities for growth, repair, deeper connection and values alignment.

Each session will include:

  • proven frameworks, skills & tools for analyzing structural sources of conflict, transforming interpersonal relationships and engaging in collaborative problem solving

  • examples and anecdotes illustrating how we have applied the tools and skills to real world challenges,

  • generative dialogue, self-reflection & small group discussions,

  • practice opportunities & prompts to immediately apply the skills and tools to your current challenges & growth edges.

The live sessions will be recorded and shared with all registered participants within 24 hours. While we fully welcome asynchronous participation, we also hope you will prioritize live attendance to gain the benefits of the interactive exercises & small group discussions, and to share your wisdom & experience in our generative space.

Each week we will also provide additional recommended resources for continued exploration, including books, articles, podcasts & videos.

All registered participants will also receive a complementary membership to Strategy & Solidarity - Subduction Consulting & El Porvenir Services’ online community & course platform. In addition to a private discussion forum & resource library for this series, you will also be able to connect with our growing community of colleagues & collaborators dedicated to racial justice, personal growth & community building.
