2022 Racial Equity Strategy & Leadership Cohort!

Leading organizational equity work requires not only a solid understanding of structural racism and its intersections with all other forms of oppression, but also:

  • the ability to educate others

  • group facilitation skills

  • community organizing skills

  • understanding HR processes and pitfalls

  • ongoing commitment to learning, self-reflection, and self-care

  • the willingness to engage in bold experiments

  • resilience & creativity to navigate failures & challenges

Under the guidance of 3 experienced organizational equity consultants, the 2022 Racial Equity Strategy & Leadership Cohort will offer participants the opportunity to hone these skills and more. Cohort participants will learn with and from colleagues leading diverse organizations while developing effective change strategies, troubleshooting challenges, and celebrating success on the path to creating more just organizations.

 

Content

Cohort sessions will strategically guide participants to develop their own organizational equity work plan, toolkit and play book, including:

Orientation & Approach: Identifying your personal and organizational “north star, guiding purpose and concrete goals for equity work.

Organizational Assessment: Identifying your organization’s baseline strengths, challenges, culture, structures, and norms.

Capacity Building: Frameworks and tools for increasing your staff’s knowledge, skills, and ability to apply an intersectional racial equity analysis to their daily work.

Communication & Conflict Resolution: Strategies and tools for engaging staff across the spectrum of starting places, leveraging support, minimizing resistace, acknowledging and repairing racialized harm.

Self-Care and Regulation: Tools and skills for attending to physical, emotional, and mental well-being for yourself and your staff.

Moving to Action: Recommendations and best practices for recruitment and retention, strategic planning and implementation, decision-making, community and stakeholder engagement, and more.

 

Schedule

2nd & 4th Fridays, January - June 2022, 9am-12pm PST

The Racial Equity Strategy & Leadership Cohort will meet bimonthly (virtually via Zoom) from January 14 - June 24, 2022 - for a total of 36+ hours of professional development, community building, collaboration, and consultation.

Each session will include 2 hours of structured, generative, facilitated content, followed by optional “office hours,” in which participants can meet individually or in small groups with the facilitators to discuss their individual questions, challenges, and circumstances.

Fall 2022
Racial Equity Policy Intensive

Our 2022 Racial Equity Policy Intensive will support participants in an intensive policy design/revision process to formalize their organization’s racial equity commitments and goals. Participation will be by-invitation-only and will prioritize members of the Racial Equity Strategy & Leadership Cohort and the facilitators’ existing clients.

Melody Martinez

Melody Martínez is the founder and principal at Acorde Consulting. She is an experienced consultant, trainer, coach, speaker, and donor organizer. She has over a decade of experience supporting small and large organizations in the nonprofit, public, and private sectors in making powerful organizational changes.

Carlos Kareem Windham

As Principal and Founder of El Porvenir Services, LLC., Carlos is on a mission to bring communities into the future, and to center the voices of the most impacted in the reclamation of their power in the intersection of race, class, and gender. Through El Porvenir, Carlos works for the creation of just ecosystems where people maintain long-term relationships across difference, in the creation of outcomes that provide equitable opportunities for the most excluded.

Theresa Logan

Theresa is Principal and Founder of Subduction Consulting and a facilitator with 20 years’ experience in community organizing, community development, public policy engagement, organizational equity, conflict resolution, and restorative justice. She is passionately dedicated to sharing skills and tools for anti-oppressive conflict transformation and trauma healing towards collective liberation. And, true collective healing and evolution is only possible with an honest reckoning with the inherent race, gender, and power dynamics present in every interpersonal conflict, group process, organizational policy, and social structure.

 

Requirements & Selection Criteria

The cohort will be limited to 20 participants. All are welcome to apply. We will prioritize applications from Black, Indigenous and People of Color leaders, and from organizations seeking to enroll multiple leaders in the cohort as a strategy team. Participation also requires that:

  • You believe that Black Lives and Trans Lives matter.

  • You are the primary decision-maker and/or you have the full support of the primary decision-maker(s) at your organization.

  • Your organization is committed to investing time/energy/resources in supporting you and your efforts to apply and implement what you learn and develop in the cohort.

  • You agree to hold any/all information about fellow cohort participants’ identities, stories, experiences, and organizations in the strictest confidentiality.

We will work to provide ASL interpretation or other accommodations upon request. Please include any accommodation requests in your application.

Investment- $3600

6-months of equivalent private consulting services would likely run your organization $36,000 - $50,000. The Racial Equity Strategy & Leadership Cohort is our collective offering to:

  • make our services accessible to organizations with limited resources

  • reach more organizations than we can directly engage in our private client work

  • build more client and community capacity to lead equity work without consultants - we would all genuinely LOVE to live in a world that no longer needed our equity consulting services!

The $25 application processing fee will be applied towards approved participants’ program fee.

Application opens November 1.
Application deadline extended to Dec 1st!
Application decisions will be announced by Dec 6th.
